About Bernese Mountain Dog
The Bernese Mountain Dog is one of the most admired working breeds in the world, known for its gentle temperament, striking appearance, and unwavering loyalty. The breed’s history dates back nearly 2,000 years to the Roman invasion of Switzerland, where ancestors of today’s Bernese Mountain Dogs were developed from powerful mastiff-type dogs and native Swiss farm dogs.
Originally bred in the Canton of Bern in the Swiss Alps, Bernese Mountain Dogs became valued as versatile farm companions. They were used to pull carts, herd livestock, guard farms, and serve as dependable family companions. Today, they remain one of the most beloved working breeds because of their calm personality and affectionate nature.
Appearance
Bernese Mountain Dogs are large, muscular dogs with a beautiful tri-colored coat consisting of rich black, rust, and white markings. Adult males typically stand between 25–27.5 inches (64–70 cm) at the shoulder and generally weigh 80–115 pounds (35–55 kg).
Their thick double coat protects them from harsh weather and contributes to their majestic appearance. Regular brushing is recommended throughout the year, with more frequent grooming during seasonal shedding in the spring and fall.
